National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week

National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week asks as many educators as possible across the nation (and beyond!) to find one day to talk to their students about becoming secondary Latin teachers. NLTRW was created to address the Latin teacher shortage that we are facing in this country. The demand for Latin continues to grow, in great measure due to our own best efforts to raise awareness about the importance and richness of the study of Latin. Now that we have created the demand, it is time to create the teachers. NLTRW is scheduled for the first full week in March, but if you cannot speak to your students that week due to testing or holidays or whatever, just pick another day of another week. The most important thing is to talk to your students about becoming teachers. For more information, including ideas, free posters to download, and funding opportunities, point your browser to promotelatin.org and click on the NLTRW link.

Dear Colleagues, I am contacting you as you are public school teachers of Latin and may or may not know about Project Proficere. It is a federally funded grant awarded to Duval County for the purpose of developing assessments for five languages including Latin. To learn more about the project and/or submit a Participant Application, please go to http://www.duvalschools.org/reseval/proficere/ There is compensation. Please act quickly as the first meeting is Nov. 8-9. You can also contact Dr. Melanie Bolt at boltm@duvalschools.org.I was unable to find all of the e-mail addresses of all of our public school teachers, so please feel free to forward this to anyone else who may not have received the message.Happy fall,Susan McDonald, CAF President

August 2011
Salvete, omnes!
Welcome back! I hope that you have had a restful and rewarding summer. Congratulations to Ken and Adam, sponsors, chaperones, and all of the students who did so well in Richmond at nationals. Please go the FJCL site (fjcl.org) to see all of the results. Kudos to Generosa et al for coaching three fabulous certamen teams – two 1st and one 2nd place.
Thanks, too, to Craig Bebergal and Adam Mize who have worked diligently on the CAF and FJCL websites. In addition to lots of interesting and helpful information, all of the registration and membership forms that you will need are either directly on the site or linked to it. Thanks to their fine work, there are no longer paper letters or forms. Please go to: caflorida.weebly.com or fjcl.org/join On the CAF site go to Related Organizations and Membership Form. On the FJCL site go to Join or directly fjcl.org/join. You can access each site from the other. If you know someone who is new to us, has changed his/her e-mail address, or accidentally may not have received this letter to her/his e-mail, please direct that colleague to the websites for all of the current news. Adam has also recently begun a Facebook group, Classical Association of Florida, if you would like to join for discussion.
The Florida Foreign Language Association conference is upon us. Early bird registration at $100, including the dinner gala, is due by September 1 for the conference Oct. 13-15. Of course you can still register later, but at a higher cost. The conference this year at the Radisson Resort ($99 per night!) in Cape Canaveral should be terrific. The keynote speakers including an astronaut are going to be fabulous. There will be a Latin session in each time block. Hans-Friedrich Mueller will be our special invited guest to speak on Caesar. Please sign up for the luncheon as well to hear about Amy Hornick’s trip to Britain. As I did last year, I really need your ideas and donations for the Latin basket to be raffled at the gala for FFLA scholarships. The CAF semi-annual business meeting will take place on Saturday the 15th.
Our other meeting will be at the Florida State Latin Forum to be held on April 12-14, 2012. The “old Hyatt” has closed once again. Aurelia and other members of the planning team scouted out several hotels and just signed a contract with the Wyndham Orlando Resort.
Please plan on leading a delegation to this year’s event. Your students will love it. If you know someone who has never attended, please extend a personal invitation to that colleague.
Remember that, in order to participate in forum, you and your students must be members of ACL, CAF, NJCL, and FJCL. All of those forms are on the sites listed on page 1. Please note where each form is to be mailed and the due date. Note in particular that your CAF dues are now payable to Sue Shelton (not Karen). Multas gratias to Sue for taking on a very big job.
In case you have not heard, Ken Andino has taken a new position in Virginia. His contribution to our organization was great, and he will be greatly missed. We wish him well in his new adventure. Also, Linda Grau, a longtime member from Shorecrest Academy, has retired to care for aging parents. We wish her our best and welcome her replacement Florent Agier. Linda hopes to attend next year’s regional forum.

I extend good wishes to you in the school year 2011-2012 and look forward to seeing many of you soon. Thanks for the invaluable gift that you share with the youth of Florida.
Susan
